What About…

 

Bombs are buzzing in Ukraine,

murders on our streets.

Gas high prices, lack of rain,

crops we may not reap.

 

The news enamored with all that’s wrong

and yes, we need to care.

But we miss the grace and kindness

the media seldom shares.

 

What about hand in hand

going for a walk?

What about a neighbor’s smile

just before a talk?

 

What about the young woman

at a stranger’s door?

Daily delivering two meals,

a smile, small talk, much more.

 

What about the servers

still masked with eyes that smile?

Or, indeed, the grocery clerk

conversing for a while.

 

People taking time for others,

a visit to Aunt Louise.

A card sent to a dying friend,

prayer on bended knees.

 

Yes, do care about larger things

looming overhead,

But do every day the small things

you control instead.
