An Old Man Laments
A vision…Huh!
Escort me to the heavenly Council, Lord.
Feed me some theophany.
For the last 2,000 years
we’ve chewed on manuscripts,
mixed bread and wine,
and splashed water.
Yet, we are amazed at your silence.
We don’t understand your subtility:
“Signs are taken for wonders,
yet, we would see a sign…
The Word within a word,
unable to speak a word.
Tenants of the house,
thoughts of a dry brain
in a dry season.”
[Gerontion by T. S. Eliot]
