Ramah*

(Art by Salvador Dali)

 Thus says the Lord:
“A voice is heard in Ramah,
    lamentation and bitter weeping.
Rachel is weeping for her children;
she refuses to be comforted for her children,
    because they are no more.”
Jeremiah 31:15

Rachel cries and we hear the echo,
her voice is amplified down the canyon.
from the heights of Ramah.

At Ramah
right now in each moment
we cannot be comforted
amidst God’s children dying.

The cliché is empty:
“This, too, will pass.”

As now we grasp
in the onslaught of grim reality.

Shout!
Cry!
Weep bitterly!
One cannot be comforted
at the apex of Ramah.

We can only lament.

*Hebrew name for a city
that means height/apex

  1. God's children dying.
In the midst of the same fearful, callous, self advancement that Herod showed when seeking to kill the infant Jesus.
