Edifice Rex
Proud of the mortar and stone
brick by brick creating a home
for the Divine.
Sincerity and loving hearts
little do they know
the Tempter’s art
of unexamined
blessed intentions.
Community of the compatible
groom each room
so picturesque.
Safe from difference
creates indifference,
blessed assurance,
eternal rest.
And through the years
the mantra:
“Bricks and mortar,
bricks and mortar,
this is what we stress.
Bricks and mortar,
bricks and mortar,
maintain the edifice.”
And so:
The Cross is lost.
Discipleship has no cost
traded for pleasant
valley Sundays
with white steeples
and manicured lawns.
And Christ – confined,
domesticated with
‘Chicken Soup for the Soul’
sermons as padded pews
give comfort to the comfortable
while beggar Lazarus languishes
at the doorsteps.
Care comes
when it is convenient
and screens are the new altar
and praise songs are about me
and never use the Psalter.
Yet the Prophet cries arise outside:
“These walls will tumble down.
Truth be will told
and the Spirit bold
will create new hallowed ground.”
