OVER ANGELS
On the occasion of the anecdotal story of the painting of the ceiling of
Holy Cross
Lutheran Church in St. Louis, Missouri and the ousting
of Professor Arlis Ahlen at Concordia Seminary
due to a
controversy over angels - circa 1972.
They’ve painted over angels
and now I don’t know how
to answer you
from my pew
the questions that you howl!
They’ve painted over angels
all away from my sight.
No book, no bell,
no candlelight swells
to brighten the gloomy night!
They’ve painted over angels,
we’re all left alone.
Comfortless, our faith must
jump on messages from home!
Dark, alone to God-knows-where
we run a crooked race.
Having seen through an angelic stare
something about grace.
They’ve painted over angels
and now we’re left with HIM.
Comfortless our faith must trust
in the cross again!
