Matthew 28:16-20

NRSV

The Commissioning of the Disciples

16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”[a]

Heresy

Far-away Father,
Confined Christ,
Domesticated Dove;
all caged by dogmatics
and the Church
caught in a
theological cul-de-sac
in its attempt to define God.

Why the first catechumens
were not asked
to assent to creedal statements
but rather devote
themselves to the Way.

Easter Vigil initiation -
immersion and made new
to live out a covenant
(i.e. trust in the Divine
and devote themselves
to godly compassion).

Salvation
meant: liberation
not a place in heaven;
salving the wounded,
healing the hurting,
living in solidarity
with the least.

Why dogmatize
the devotion
out of faithful hearts?

God is not some
philosophical mystery
to be defined;
but the Divine
presence
in all of creation
to be attended to
and view
the myriad
of ways
God
is
revealed.
